ResMed AirMini Review: The 2023 Guide to the Best-Rated Travel CPAP

Updated: April, 2023

If you’re checking out travel CPAP machines, you’ll find that you’ve got more options than ever before. And thanks to advances in technology, those options are packed with more features than ever before!

But that can be a blessing and a curse– how do you compare them evenly, so that you get the best mini CPAP machine for your money? That’s why we’ve written these guides, to explore the pros and cons of some of the most popular CPAPs available, and answer some of the most common questions. Today, we’ll be looking at the world’s smallest CPAP: the ResMed AirMini.

ResMed AirMini Pros

The AirMini travel CPAP is one of the best-selling CPAPs out there, and for good reason. ResMed managed to take the same effective CPAP therapy pressure and advanced comfort features as its larger machines, and fit them into a package that weighs less than a pound.

Here are some of the reasons why thousands of CPAP users love the AirMini:

  • You can switch between APAP or CPAP.
In fact, it can be set to three different therapy modes: fixed-pressure CPAP, AutoSet (APAP), and AutoSet for Her. That way you’re sure to stay in the right pressure range for you.
  • It uses the same algorithms as the ResMed AirSense 10.
ResMed’s algorithms are responsible for how your air pressure adjusts to your unique breathing pattern– so if you’re already comfortable with the feel of a ResMed PAP, you’ll receive the exact same sleep therapy you’re used to.
  • Waterless humidification system means no more packing water bottles.
A humidifier can make CPAP therapy dramatically more comfortable, but making sure you always have distilled water can be a big hassle. The AirMini’s HumidX is a small disc about the size of a quarter that's inserted into your AirMini’s short tube. HumidX utilizes patented technology that reuses moisture from your breath to add humidity to your therapy air.
  • You can control it remotely with your smartphone.
Built-in Bluetooth connectivity means you can connect your phone (or other smart device) to the AirMini app. This allows you to wirelessly adjust your air pressure and comfort settings. It also gives you fast access to your sleep data, including a daily Sleep Score, so you can rest easy knowing your sleep apnea treatment is effective!
  • It’s FAA approved for in-flight use.
Since CPAP machines are medical equipment, airlines are required to allow them onboard without counting them as carry-on items. But not all CPAP machines are approved for use on the plane. The ResMed AirMini is fully FAA approved, so you’re good to go!

ResMed AirMini Cons

No one is perfect, and the same goes for CPAP machines. To make a fair comparison between travel machines, you also need to consider the downsides. While the ResMed AirMini travel CPAP is incredibly popular, there are a few complaints that some CPAP users have…

  • It’s a little louder than an AirSense.
At 30 dBa the AirMini is still quite literally whisper-quiet, but it is noticeably louder than the AirSense 11, which clocks in at only 27 dBa.

That may not seem like much of a difference, but for some light sleepers it can be a dealbreaker.
  • It requires a compatible mask.
Because of its ultra-slim tubing, the AirMini is only directly compatible with select ResMed masks. If you’re already a fan of a CPAP mask from another brand, you’ll have to shell out extra for an aftermarket adapter.

If you’re not already married to your mask, the AirMini’s selection includes full face, nasal, and nasal pillow mask options– so you’re sure to find a comfortable fit.
  • It doesn’t come with a battery.
Since a portable CPAP is meant to be used on-the-go, it needs flexible power supply options, so a lack of a battery seems like an oversight.

You can purchase an aftermarket battery and even a DC converter that allows you to use USB outlets or solar panels, but out of the box the AirMini machine will need to be plugged into a standard AC outlet.
